Through our work, we’ve been lucky enough to visit some of the most beautiful and amazing spots on the planet. I’ve tried to capture my sense of wonder, awe and inspiration through photography, whether it be images of elephants crossing the Maasai Mara, a tranquil bamboo forest in Kyoto, or prayer flags flapping in the Himalayan winds. St. George’s Church – Lalibela, Ethiopia
To get this image, I made sure we were in Lalibela on a Sunday, which is the day all the worshippers visit the churches for services. I also made sure to get up early in the morning to get the best light. This image was taken just after sunrise, and we had climbed up to a popular vantage point for photographing St. George’s. A combination of nice light, white robed figures dotting the landscape, and the contrasting green and brown of trees and earth make for an iconic image.[divider]
Reclining Buddha – Vang Vieng, Laos
We visited Laos during the rainy season, so on this day we had already walked a few miles through mud and rice paddies to get to this cave. Luckily for us, the weather had deterred anyone else from having the same idea. After climbing down into the cave, I saw the reclining Buddha and snapped a photo. The soft cool light coming through the cave entrance combined with the eerie darkness makes for a tranquil and atmospheric image.[divider]
Tori Gate – Miyajima, Japan
One of the most photographed spots in Japan, the Tori Gate stands tall in the waters outside of Miyajima. In order to capture an image that wasn’t the typical tourist snap, I waited until the sun started to set and chose a more unique framing. Placing the gate at the bottom of the frame and allowing the sky to fill the rest allows for a more modern and abstract perspective of this iconic structure. It also helped to have a cold beer to drink while we waited for the sun to set.
